Sunday morning Battambang: an oasis of tranquility in a very hectic week. 300 people, predominantly young, many of them Catholic but an equal number who are not, come together in peace for reflection, spiritual refreshment and prayer. As always , a unique and beautiful experience.
The ‘day of rest’ theme is all set to continue with lunch at the Lonely Tree Cafe in the city but half way through we get a call to visit the Salesian Sisters (Don Bosco) to discuss vocational training sponsorship for girls. As this is the main purpose of the Bob Maidment Educational Support Fund it’s a no-brainer. So a ten minute ride in a very suspect tuktuk over appalling roads brings us to the Don Bosco Literacy & Skills Center on the outskirts of the city.

The Sisters run a residential hostel here for 90 girls plus a kindergarten. The meeting was able to identify the potential for Support Cambodia to maybe help girl students from poor families access training and was followed by a tour of the centre and the obligatory photo opportunity. So much for the ‘day off’….but no regrets: very well worth the effort…..watch this space.
