Kon Damrai Primary is a school in a remote rural location close to the Thai border where most families are very poor, living on the ‘dollar-a-day’ level. Until 2017, when Support Cambodia put in two borewells, the only water supply was a pretty but filthy pool. The wells enabled a rice soup programme to be started and the kitchenette, also funded by Support Cambodia means the feeding programme can continue all year. In addition to the 200+ pupils at the school, there is also a day care programme for 2 -5 year olds, many of whom are cared for by their grandparents, mum & dad having gone off to Thailand to find work.
The number of children coming to day care has risen from 40 to over 70 [the lure of a rice soup meal?] and they just don’t have enough space. They seem to have been been using this ‘shack’ next door to accommodate all of them but it’s obviously not fit for purpose. So a new, extended building is required.
The redoubtable Sister Vangie Dunton, is overseeing the project. The building will start this month and will hopefully be completed before Christmas. Three of our current Trustees have visited the school several times and so are familiar with the area and what is required.
UPDATE: thanks to many very generous contributions – in particular an amazing Race Night total of over £950 – the $3,100 needed to rebuild the Day Care Room has been achieved. ‘Okoon charen’ to all who helped in any way.
