| Well, it’s been quite a summer! The combined total from two Table Top Sales, events at Wickmere and Mannington, proceeds from The Hutch, Support Cambodia Shop, Carol Shippey’s various stalls and several large individual donations raised over £6,500 – not too shabby for a tiny charity!!! Of course, we wouldn’t be in this position without the wonderful generosity of you, the donors and those committed ‘SUPPORTERS’ who contributed so much to make it happen. On behalf of the Trustees, our distributing partners in Cambodia and all our beneficiaries, ‘okoon charen’ to each one of you. Great team – great work! So what have we done with the money? | | | | | |

| As you will have seen in the September Update, the Wickmere Open Garden & Village Yard Sale in August alone raised a staggering £3082 which easily completed the new borewell at Ochra Kandal Farm. A report and pictures of the event with our thanks to all involved appeared in the September Update, was sent out by email and is also available on the website under NEWS. | | | | | |
| In addition to the £450 needed to complete the Ochra Kandal Borewell, the huge success of the Wickmere event has enabled us to fund three more borewells, urgently needed in the Nikum area, in remote country about an hour outside Battambang. Nikum is a large, sprawling community scattered over a wide area, much of it forested and bisected by narrow, seemingly identical dirt tracks. The number of houses is growing and many people are still unable to work because of Covid-19. Clean water – indeed any water – is scarce, especially in the dry season and as Parish Priest Rajat Hassapurti tells us, ”the villagers have to buy water in the dry season every year. Sometimes they are forced to buy very dirty muddy water which can’t be used immediately”. So Support Cambodia will fund three wells in different locations to serve in excess of 100 families. Local residents and the head of the village will be responsible for looking after the wells. Drilling is scheduled to start at the end of October. | | | | | |

| In the Summer issue of Mango News, we featured Abigail Durrant from Wiltshire who very generously offered to donate the proceeds of a 5000km virtual cycle ride to provide a much-needed Hand Wash Facility at Day So Primary School in Pailin Province. We are delighted to report Abbie has completed the ride, the Hand Wash is finished and is ready for use. All that’s needed now is children – access still badly affected by Covid-19 - but it’s a great addition to the school’s health programme and one which will benefit a large number of children over the next few years. Many congratulations Abbie - and ‘thank you’ from both the staff and students of Day So and from Support Cambodia. | | | | | |

| The Marist Brothers is an international Community of Religious Brothers, dedicated to the education of young people - especially those neglected. Currently there are about 5,000 brothers working in 80 countries including those in Cambodia. One of these Brothers is Francis Peter Amoako Attah, inspirational Principal of the Marist Education Centre in Pailin and long-standing friend of Support Cambodia. Born in 1958, Francis is from Ghana in West Africa. In 1987, he was among the second group of Ghanaians to join the Marists, and over the last 34 years he has studied and worked in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Ireland, England, Algeria, Philippines and Cambodia. Brother Francis has been responsible for helping to establish the Learning Centre in Pailin, which currently offers English language and computer studies. On site there is also a kindergarten, and a mile away, an almost-completed residential hostel enabling students from poor rural families to attend high school in Pailin City. Alongside these, Francis has also established health and education outreach programmes in the local community, while working with local government to improve living conditions for disadvantaged families. | | | | | |
| Support Cambodia’s first two borewells in 2016 were a direct result of Francis’ involvement with Phnom Priel Primary School – we remember vividly the moment the water came out of the ground for the first time! Since then, our charity has sunk six more wells in the Pailin area, provided bicycles, toiletries, food aid, water filters, toilets for poor families, solar energy system for Phnom Priel Primary School, educational equipment and most recently, practical support for the new Lavalla Hostel. Visiting the Brothers is one of the highlights of our Trustee trips to Cambodia – a beautiful setting among the Cardamom Hills, a wonderfully warm welcome, stimulating conversation with lots of laughter… and delicious food. Francis is a superb cook and his Tipsy Tart is to die for! But what always stands out is the dedication, the warmth, and the Brothers’ genuine love and commitment to the ‘poorest of the poor’. Many years ago, Francis dubbed our charity “Team Cambodia” - and we are so blessed to have him as an integral member of that team. Thank you, Francis, for all you and the Brothers do for the people of Pailin and for inspiring us here in the UK to continue “Supporting Cambodia”. | | | | | |

| Covid-19 in Cambodia: Currently, the country has had over 113,000 infections with more than 2,000 deaths. Although the vaccination programme is going well with [as at 4th October] 69% of Cambodians now double-jabbed, the situation is still very uncertain. Traditionally, large gatherings to remember and pray for deceased family members take place during the annual Pchum Ben celebration but for the second year running, this has not been allowed. With many students aged 12- 17 already vaccinated, the government is hoping to re-open schools to Grade 9 students and above by the end of October. | In view of the unexpected success of our fundraising this summer and of the current economic situation, the Trustees have decided there will probably NOT be an Annual Appeal this year. However, if an emergency arises in Cambodia [as it did in 2020] the decision could be reviewed, in which case we will let you know. But we are also aware there are people who like to make a donation to Support Cambodia leading up to Christmas and this option is still there with contributions either to the General Fund or to one of our six Restricted Funds gratefully received. Details of these on the website here. Where possible, please reference your donation so we know where to direct it. Thank you | | | | | |
| We are beginning to look ahead to future fundraising so we’d love to hear from you if you have any ideas or would like support to run your own fundraising event. In addition, we’d like to hear from jam makers willing to help maintain the supply of Support Cambodia jam and preserves. Give us a call if you think you might be able to help. | | | | | |

| From the end of November, Virgin Money Giving will cease to operate. We are currently looking at alternatives and will advise you once we have decided on a new provider.
